Overview

Cattaraugus County is one of 12 Upstate NY counties that volunteered in July 2011 to take part in a pilot project funded by NYS OMH. In October 2012 these same 12 counties became the first cohort to participate in the NYS Success SOC Learning Collaborative. Cattaraugus County is a rural county with a strong Native American presence. The Cattaraugus County SOC team decided to utilize cultural healing interventions with Native American populations to address the high percentage of this population who suffer from grief. With funding from NYS Success, Cattaraugus County was able to provide White Bison training to non-Native American service providers; as well as, Native American community members. The Cattaraugus SOC team was able to hold a meeting with leaders from the Seneca Nation to plan future collaborations between Native American and non-Native American community members.
